Learning Is Swell

This has a been an excellent semester. A vast amount of knowledge has been stored away in my noggin. The most important thing I have learned is that, copyright patents are harmful to innovation. This is contrary to popular opinion but it seems that people forget that humans are greedy by nature. If it wasn't for major companies suing smaller companies for minor infringements, then copyrights would be helpful. I had the opportunity to research net neutrality. Quite a fascinating subject. I learned that the Internet faces a danger from the people who provide us with the network. Another subject that caught my eye was the driver-less cars. The idea of a safer vehicle is a golden one. I hope to see this amazing technology in person one day. For the next students to take this class, I would tell them to pick a topic that intrigues them to study. Also it would be helpful to take advantage of the job fest. After all, this course is to help the students in the job finding process.

The Sweet Nectar

Growing up I always hated bees. In my opinion, they are quite a nuisance. Considering this mindset, I never thought bees could be so interesting. Nor did I know how useful they were for making puns. Most importantly, bees are crucial to plant life and efficient at producing honey.
The presentation in the last class gave me a small idea about what beekeeping entails. It portrayed the impact the Hive Tracks program could have the world of beekeeping. Being able to record data from the hives will open up many doors for the keeper. Having a network of beekeepers sharing information seems like a wonderful idea, but creating this network can cause privacy issues. The ability to keep data private is crucial to this application but that would not be a problem to incorporate.

An Ethical Reflection

In the last meeting of my Computer Science Seminar we had to give a presentation on our personal ethics. If I were to sum my moral landscape into one word it would experience. After the presentations, an open discussion was held on ethics. This allowed people to voice their opinions on certain moral quandaries that arose during the discussion. We talked about a few random issues then the focus seemed to switch towards drugs, which is a major issue in our current society. Many people had various view points on drugs but the consensus seemed to be that drugs are indeed bad. Even with this conclusion we seemed comfortable stating that this was not enough to tell others that they cannot partake in drug use. I used the analogy of telling someone they cannot do drugs because I do not like them is like me telling someone they cannot eat a do-nut because I am on a diet. In my opinion the discussion was not necessarily on drugs but on the bigger picture of freedom.

Introduction

My name is Corey Hartis. I am a 20 year old senior computer science major. A fifth year seems to be in store for me at Appalachian University. This extra year will create an opportunity for me to further my education and tack on a math minor. An internship is something else that I have yet to do. This coming summer is when I plan to dive into my first experience in the professional world as a computer scientist. The internship will hopefully give me an idea of the career possibilities that are in store for me after graduation. I cannot say what I want to do specifically after graduation but I do know the work environment I would enjoy to be in.
Money is very important this day and age, which means I would like to make a pretty penny. Benefits are always nice too. A strong work community is vital to success when working on large projects. People  that can communicate and work together like a well oiled machine would be a great thing to be a part of. Most of all, I would just like to work on something that makes me happy.
